Museum of the Naufragos

A unique project in Cape Verde!

A unique project in Cape Verde!

Finally, Salrei has a beautiful museum that displays collections of cultural anthropology, works of art and underwater archaeological finds.

The permanent exhibition focuses on the history and culture of the Cape Verde Islands and is unique in its private structure of anthropological and artistic interest in Cape Verde.
Founded and developed by the Dos Naufragos association, it was built with materials found on the island, with special attention to recycling.

In the rooms, a permanent exhibition presents the anthropological culture of Cape Verde and its art and history using different approaches to bring the relevance and uniqueness of Creole culture closer to visitors.

The story is told from the point of view of a "castaway" lost in the sea of life. The metaphor of shipwreck refers to the condition of man who, like Jonah, Ulysses and Robinson Crusoe, sets out on a journey on the open sea, far from home, in search of knowledge.
The museum fulfils the dual mission of preserving the history, culture and diversity of the past and providing a place for open debate about the future and a better understanding of what it means to be human beyond mere ethnicity. The upper rooms of the building host temporary exhibitions by local and international artists, symbolising art as a universal language.
